NEW YORK, NY, USA - The Top 8 seeds went 4-0 on Wednesday, with Kim Clijsters, Venus Williams, Samantha Stosur and Francesca Schiavone all winning through to the third round of the US Open in straight sets.

Three of the quartet won through later in the day, most notably No.2 seed and defending champion Clijsters, who rolled past Australian qualifier Sally Peers in the feature night match, 62 61. Peers idolized Clijsters while growing up.

"I had posters of Steffi Graf and Monica Seles. Probably for other reasons I had posters of Pat Rafter in my room," Clijsters said. "I remember playing Steffi at Wimbledon, qualifying there and playing her in the third or fourth round. I remember I was so in awe of the name 'Steffi Graf', her being there. Sometimes I couldn't even believe I was walking next to her. It's something you need to experience, it's something that makes you more mature. It was a career-changing moment. It makes you realize those players are just like people.

"That made me realize she was one of the most professional girls out there. That's what you have to do if you want to get there. It's the hard work and the details that make the difference. I'm interested in seeing how Sally does."

Also getting wins in later in the day were No.5 seed Stosur, who reached the third round of the US Open for the first time in seven tries with a 61 64 win over fellow Aussie Anastasia Rodionova, and No.6 seed Schiavone, who crushed fellow Italian Maria Elena Camerin, 62 61. There was a wave of upsets among the other seeds, including a worrying 51 retirement victory for Gisela Dulko against No.10 seed Victoria Azarenka, after Azarenka collapsed on the court - read more about that here.

No.13 seed Marion Bartoli, No.21 seed Zheng Jie, No.28 seed Alisa Kleybanova and No.32 seed Tsvetana Pironkova were also ousted, with Zheng falling to former No.1 and 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic handily in the first match of the day, 63 60 - read more about that here.
