Under the roof of Centre Court, Yaroslava Shvedova was the first to move on, losing the first set after leading 4-2 but eventually rolling past Japanese wildcard Kurumi Nara, 46 62 61. That was followed by another Japanese wildcard, Kimiko Date Krumm, defeating No.12 seed and defending champion Maria Sharapova, 75 36 63. Read more about Date Krumm's victory here.

The first two second round matches of the week followed the Japanese home favorites' matches, with No.6 seed Agnieszka Radwanska routining Olga Govortsova, 62 63, and No.3 seed Jelena Jankovic improving to 12-1 lifetime against Alona Bondarenko with a 64 61 victory, fighting back from 3-1 down in the first set and cruising to the finish line. Jankovic was a finalist here last year.

In the last two matches of the night on Centre, Ana Ivanovic bounced Alisa Kleybanova, 63 62, a day after the Russian claimed her second title of the year over in Seoul; and German rising star Julia Goerges regrouped after blowing a 5-2 second set lead to beat Dinara Safina, 61 57 62.

No.10 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, No.11 seed Marion Bartoli, No.13 seed Shahar Peer, No.14 seed Aravane Rezai, Alexandra Dulgheru, Sara Errani and qualifiers Roberta Vinci and Coco Vandeweghe scored wins too.
