BEIJING, China - Maria Sharapova rebounded from a first round loss at last week's Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo with a straight set win in her first match of the China Open in Beijing, beating Tsvetana Pironkova, 64 76(5).

Sharapova, the No.12 seed at the $4.5-million tournament, had some trouble closing the Wimbledon semifinalist out, losing nine straight points while leading 64 54 and double match point at 40-15; but she regrouped to take the second set to a tie-break and managed to get by Pironkova in two sets.

"Going down in the first round of Tokyo gives you a window to prepare but it also doesn't give you as much match play as you would have hoped. First rounds are always difficult, and I had a tough opponent today," Sharapova said. "At the end of the day, I found a way to win and that was the most important thing."

The highest seed in action on Day 2 was No.4 seed Samantha Stosur, who lost to Anastasija Sevastova, 26 76(5) 75. Stosur led 5-2 in the third set and had match point leading 5-4, but the match turned completely from there, as Sevastova won 11 of the next 12 points to collect her second Top 10 win, having beaten Jelena Jankovic in Monterrey in March. Like Sharapova, Stosur had lost her first match in Tokyo; unlike Sharapova, it happened here too.
