BEIJING, China - A day after Caroline Wozniacki won her 56th match of the year to secure a rise to No.1, Vera Zvonareva won her 45th to assure herself of No.3, beating Francesca Schiavone and reaching the China Open semis.

Zvonareva, the No.2 seed in the Chinese capital, had never lost in nine career meetings against No.5 seed Francesca Schiavone, and improved to 10-0 on Friday with a 54-minute, 60 62 win. She won the first 11 games of the match before Schiavone snuck two games in, but the Russian served it out at love.

"She's too good of a player to lose 12 games in a row, and in tennis the match is not over until you shake hands," Zvonareva said. "From the side it may have looked like it was easy, but there are no easy matches in an event like this."

Awaiting Zvonareva in the semifinals is No.9 seed Li Na, who beat qualifier Anastasija Sevastova, 76(6) 63, coming back from 5-3 down in the tie-break.

Zvonareva and Li are tied in their head-to-head series, 3-3.

"Li established herself as one of the top players over the last few years, and we always have tough matches," Zvonareva said. "She takes her chances and she also makes you play a lot of shots. It will be a difficult one."

No.1 seed Wozniacki and No.15 seed Shahar Peer will contest the other semifinal, after Wozniacki edged former No.1 Ana Ivanovic, 76(1) 64, and Peer got past surprise quarterfinalist Timea Bacsinszky, 76(4) 64.

"It was a great feeling this morning to wake up knowing I'll be the world No.1," Wozniacki said. "On the court it didn't feel different, though. It's still the same. I knew it was going to be a tough match today. It was going to be a battle."

Wozniacki leads Peer in their head-to-head series, 3-1, but the one loss did come in their last meeting, in the round of 16 in Dubai earlier this year.
