BEIJING, China - Chuang Chia-Jung and Olga Govortsova surprised the best team of the year in the China Open final, winning their first title together with a 76(2) 16 107 win over No.1 seeds Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta.
Chuang and Govortsova, who partnered up for the first time in Dubai earlier this year but had never been beyond the quarterfinals of any tournament until this week, dropped the middle set in just 32 minutes and looked headed for defeat as they fell behind 6-4 in the match tie-break, but they rallied for a 10-7 win.
"Because it's in China it's very special for me," Chuang, from Chinese Taipei, said. "Olga and I have played together about half a year now and this was our best week together. We played aggressively and that was the key today."
"Almost all of our matches this week went to a tie-break, and when we get there we play so focused," Govortsova said. "CJ was hitting great volleys and I was hitting hard from the baseline. Gisela and Flavia are so good, we're really happy.
"I've been to Beijing nine or 10 times now. I can't wait to come back again."
Chuang and Govortsova had also upset No.2 seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik and No.4 seeds Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova en route to the final. Those two teams plus Dulko and Pennetta are will be in the four team doubles field at the season-ending WTA Championships - Doha 2010.
Dulko and Pennetta are ranked No.2 and No.3 in the world in doubles while Chuang and Govortsova were No.42 and No.45 this week - that will change.
