Elena Beats Sam

DOHA, Qatar - In by far the most competitive match of the week so far, Elena Dementieva came out on top against Samantha Stosur in a three set thriller, rallying from a set down to beat the Australian on Thursday, 46 64 76(4).
Stosur had all the momentum coming into the match, winning their most recent encounter at the US Open and going 4-0 in sets so far this week in their round robin group (including a 64 63 win over Caroline Wozniacki the day before); but Dementieva was all business after the first set and on a revenge mission.
Dementieva, the No.7 seed, broke early in the second set, and even though she gave the one break lead up she got another break in the ninth game to go up 5-4, serving it out right there to take the match to a third. Neither player budged on serve in the third set, Stosur missing out on both break point chances she had and Dementieva not even getting any; a deciding tie-break arrived.
It was somewhat reminiscent of their recent US Open match, where Stosur saved four match points to win a Sunday night nail-biter, 63 26 76(2); Dementieva would prevail this time however, getting to quadruple match point at 6-2, then after two backhand errors edging the No.5 seed on a service winner.
"It wasn't easy to play today after losing to Caroline very easily, but I just tried to improve and be ready for today," Dementieva said. "Sam had a great win last night. I tried to fight for every point. I'm really enjoying my time here, it's very special for me to be here in Doha playing the WTA Championships."
By virtue of winning her first two round robin matches in straight sets and now taking a set off Dementieva, Stosur secured a semifinal berth in Doha.
