Russian superstar Elena Dementieva's unexpected retirement following the WTA Championships - Doha 2010 elicited lots of reaction from her fans around the world. The 16-time singles titlist was admired for her competitive spirit and stylistic play on the court and for her down-to-earth attitude off the court. Here is just a small portion of the farewell messages submitted to the WTA website on her behalf, making it obvious just how much she will be missed:
Dear Ms. Dementieva, just a word to wish you well on your retirement from the tennis circuit. I saw you play on a number of occasions at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Thank you for the entertainment you gave us and, being a professor of French, I want to compliment you on your beautiful French.
Elena, I always admired the way you played and the way you carried yourself on and off the court. I live near New Haven and saw you play and practice many times there. You were always nice to the fans and gave some great performances in the tournament. I wish you all the best in the next chapter of your life.

Thank you, Elena, for the wonderful tennis you played through all these years. There is no player in the WTA I rather see play than you. Your charisma is outstanding. I will miss you a lot and wish you the best of luck in your future and hope that maybe you will change your decision and come back to the WTA someday. I would love to see you there again. Best wishes.
Dear Elena, I've been following your amazing career all these years and I'll miss you enormously. I think you already know that you may be remembered as the best player not to have won a major, but I can reinforce that you've got a lot to be proud of; your grace and fighting spirit will live on. Thanks very much for so many special moments and I wish you, from the bottom of my heart, all the best for the future.
Nino, London, England
Elena, congratulations on an excellent career. Tennis is my favorite sport, especially women's tennis. It has been a delight to watch you play among the sport's elite players. May you have as much success in your second career as you had in your first.

Dear Elena, I am a senior citizen and widower. I have had many years of joy of watching you play. Your high integrity and professionalism continually showed in your game and close matches you played. Your beautiful grace on and off the court was unique and you are truly a stellar sportswoman. May you continue to flourish and prosper in whatever you do in the future and I wish you all the very best and may you always achieve your dreams. CONGRATULATIONS AND VERY WELL DONE and you will be sadly missed on the small screen. Best wishes.

Hi Elena, you have always been my favorite player on the WTA - both for what you did on the court and how you came across off the court. When you were in Montréal this summer, you were kind enough to take two minutes of your time to take a picture with me and exchange a couple of words in French with me. That really made my day. I'll miss you so much. I wish you all the best. Thanks for everything. Merci!
Elena, it was a privilege to see you play all these years. You have such class; you set the example for the other players. The WTA will now have an empty place. I wish you success in your next part of life.
You are such a great player. I love your game. I am sorry to see you go. Good luck in the future. You have always handled yourself with class and I will miss watching you play. I've rooted for you many times and your classic matches have brought me much excitement and joy.
Hi Elena. You were the biggest reason why I started watching women's tennis. You are such an inspiration. I enjoyed watching you play all the time. I will really miss your spectacular play. But I am happy for you. You will always be one of the best women's tennis players in the world. All the best.
Dear Elena, congratulations on a wonderful tennis career. I am an avid tennis fan and have loved watching your matches. Even though you were a fierce competitor, your good nature always shone through and you were a pleasure to watch. I hope you find much happiness in your retirement.
Dearest Elena, I was so upset when I heard your decision to retire, but I think it is great that you are doing it on your own terms. I will always remember the great matches you gave us. I wish you the absolute best for whatever you have planned in life, but please do not lose touch with tennis. We need your support and contributions, always, even off-court.
Elena, congratulations on a great and long career. Your matches were never boring and it will be sad not to see you anymore, but it is great for you to retire whilst you are still a Top 10 player. Seeing the rest of the players and how emotional they were shows just how high a regard your fellow professionals had for you as well as your many fans around the world. Best of luck for your future and to your mom, too. I am so happy that you are happy and that you have something which very few tennis players have - an Olympic gold medal. Take care.

You were as graceful off the court as you were on the court. Good luck in the next chapter of your life. Hopefully, we will see you courtside soon.
What a fighter you are, Elena. I always enjoyed watching you play and saw you play in Charleston many times in person. You will be missed. A true professional with a great attitude. Good luck with your new life beyond tennis!
We've admired you for many years, and we will miss you ... I'll even miss your new serve!

It was your passion and joy in playing the game that I loved to watch. When you were on top, you were gracious. When you struggled, you did it admirably. Your career depicts a message of a champion. Thanks for many years of inspiration and pleasure as a viewer.

Thank you Elena for your tennis, for your fair play, your attitude, your elegance and for the emotions. You're the smartest and nicest tennis player in the world. I'll miss you so much. Thank you so much.
I wish you the best, Elena. You have always been my favorite player as well as the rest of my family's. This might seem over the top, but I don't even know if I will ever enjoy watching the WTA without you anymore! I will miss you always. Best wishes.

Hello Elena, we have watched you with enormous pleasure for years. We'll especially miss your wonderful movement and groundstrokes, your admirable will to win and exemplary on-court demeanor. I hope that the rest of your life is happy and fulfilled. Thanks for the memories.
Sylvia & David
Very sorry to see you go; you have been a great sport and a credit to your country. Every good wish for good health and happiness in the years that lie ahead. Good luck and thank you!
John, Queensland, Australia
Elena, I had the huge pleasure of watching you at the ASB Classic and since then have been a HUGE fan of yours. I was so sad to see the news but happy that you are going to be moving on. I hope that this is not the end of your career in the spotlight and I will miss watching you on television and getting up at 3am to watch you play :D Or maybe not :) You have made tennis exciting and I have enjoyed following your progress over the years. Good luck for the future; you deserve it! Go for gold!
Hi Elena, it's been great following you all these years, in particular at the last six Australian Opens, where every year I would watch you train and play. I always enjoyed watching you play, and I really enjoyed and admired your treatment of your fans. I think one image of you that will always stick in my mind from seeing you at Melbourne Park is that you would try to sign for every fan, and have your picture taken with as many as you could. It's going to be different next year without you being there! I wish you all the best for your life away from tennis, and hopefully all your fans will be able to see you again in the future.
Thank you for being such a classy and talented act from beginning to end. What a wonderful example you've set for the young women of this world.
Bev, Florida, USA
What a sad day for the millions of your fans (me being the No.1). You were always a pleasure to watch and a very gracious and lovely lady. Good luck in whatever you choose to do in the future. Look after yourself, stay healthy and God bless you for all your enjoyment given to the many who followed your tennis career. P.S. You will now have more time to look after your gorgeous Yorkshire terrier! Best wishes.
