How did the stars of the WTA spend the off-season? In the lead-up to the Aussie Open, wtatour.com will be helping answer that question...
Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong, Great Britain's Top 2 players, both enjoyed strong 2010 seasons, and after some intense training in the off-season, are hoping for even more in 2011. Here they are in their own words...
Elena on her off-season training...
"I really enjoyed the pre-season training block, even though for the first few weeks I was falling asleep on my sofa almost as soon as I sat down in the evening because I was so tired! My coach Nino prepared a very detailed schedule of training, which was designed to build my physical and mental strength gradually over the course of the pre-season. The club where I train in Ipswich, in eastern England, is nothing fancy - it has a tennis court and a gym, and that's all you really need. That and a lot of hard work, of course!"
Anne on her off-season training...
"This year, I decided to stay in London for my pre-season training. We spend so much of our year travelling on the tour and I just wanted to spend some time at home with my friends and family and have a bit of a normal life as well as training hard. I did a lot of strength work in the gym and willing my muscles to get bigger! As well as the tennis and gym work, I did some boxing and indoor rock climbing as alternative training sessions. It was hard work but good fun too, and although it was too cold to train outside, that's something I can live with!"
