Groth prevailed over qualifier Tamira Paszek, 64 76(5), surviving a second set in which she lost three straight games after taking a 5-3 lead and lost five straight points after taking a 4-0 lead in the tie-break. However, the Australian, who was defeated in her only previous meeting with Paszek at Warsaw in 2007, captured the last three points of the tie-break to clinch the match.
Groth, whose 2010 was highlighted by her first career title in Guangzhou and second career semifinal showing in Istanbul, rose to a career-high ranking of No.40 on Monday. She will play the winner of Roberta Vinci and Elena Baltacha, which was the only other singles match to at least complete the first set Tuesday, with the Italian taking it, 6-3. Also Tuesday, qualifier Olga Govortsova got an early break on Peng Shuai and has a 2-1 first set lead. The rest of those two matches and the other five round of 16 encounters will be played on Wednesday.
