MELBOURNE, Australia - The first round of the Australian Open doubles event is in the books, with only one of the 16 seeded teams eliminated.

In fact, none of the eight seeded teams to advance Thursday even dropped a set. However, Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, in pursuit of their first Grand Slam, were tested, getting past Marina Erakovic and Tamarine Tanasugarn, 64 75. The No.2 seeds are now 8-1 on the year, including a title in Auckland and runner-up showing in Sydney. Next up for them is dangerous Czech duo Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, who have four career titles together.

Fifth-seeded Cara Black and Anastasia Rodionova had an easier time of it in their first round, disposing of Tamira Paszek and Tsvetana Pironkova, 62 61. This is just their seventh event together, but they should not be taken lightly, as they went all the way to the semis in their first major - last year's US Open.

Playing as well as anyone right now are No.6 seeds Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Their 62 64 defeat of Kateryna Bondarenko and Dinara Safina was their 11th win in their last 12 matches, including titles in Tokyo at the end of last season and Sydney at the beginning of this one.

Also moving on were seventh-seeded Julia Goerges and Lisa Raymond, 10th-seeded Monica Niculescu and Yan Zi, 12th-seeded Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko, 14th-seeded Shahar Peer and Peng Shuai and 16th-seeded Timea Bacsinszky and Tathiana Garbin. The lone seeded team to be taken down was 11th-seeded Francesca Schiavone and Rennae Stubbs, who fell to Michaella Krajicek and Petra Kvitova, 60 75.

No.1 seeds Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta are among those in second round action on Friday.
