PATTAYA CITY, Thailand - Vera Zvonareva put her Australian Open semifinal loss to Kim Clijsters behind her with a first round triumph at the PTT Pattaya Open, where the two-time defending champion seems to be as comfortable as anywhere else in the world.

The top-seeded Zvonareva was tested a bit in the first set on Tuesday against Tamira Paszek, starting off in a 1-3 hole, but ultimately prevailed, 64 62. Her 11th straight match win here upped her record in Pattaya City to 13-2. The only other event where Zvonareva has multiple titles is Memphis, where she is also 13-2, but she hasn't played there since 2005.

No.2 seed Ana Ivanovic, who is also looking to put a defeat at the Australian Open behind her, was in late 2010 form in her 60 62 rout of Nudnida Luangnam. The Serb was soaring up the rankings after winning two of her final three events last year, but an abdominal strain curtailed her preparations for Melbourne, where she lost a three-setter in the first round to Ekaterina Makarova.

Fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova advanced to set up an intriguing second round clash with Kimiko Date-Krumm. However, seventh-seeded Zheng Jie - playing her first match since the US Open because of a left wrist injury that sidelined her - was the first seed to fall, losing to Akgul Amanmuradova.

In a noteworthy match involving unseeded players, Ayumi Morita took out last year's finalist, Tamarine Tanasugarn, in straight sets. The Thai was playing this event for a remarkable 18th time.

Ivanovic and No.3 seed Maria Kirilenko are among those in second round action Wednesday.
