BOGOTÁ, Colombia - It was a rain-interrupted but dramatic Monday at the XIX Copa BBVA Colsanitas, with both seeds in first round action going down.

One of those was No.8 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues, who had a 5-1 career record against Colombian wildcard Catalina Castaño before this week. However, her one defeat had occurred at this event in 2004 in a third set tie-break. Fast forward seven years and once again Castaño took out the Spaniard in a third set tie-break, this time with a scoreline of 76(5) 26 76(5) in a match that lasted three and a half hours. The third set was especially dramatic, as Castaño survived a match point while down 5-3 before rallying.

"It is so good to play in my country and it is amazing to have people around supporting me," said Castaño about her first main draw match triumph since last July in Prague. "We don't have so many events in Colombia and I am so happy for this opportunity."

The other seed to be eliminated Monday was third-seeded Simona Halep, who fell to Mathilde Johansson, 76(5) 75. The Frenchwoman came back from deficits of 3-1 in the first set and 4-1 in the second in securing her first main draw match win since October 2009 in Osaka.

Clinching main draw spots with victories in the final round of qualifying play were Corinna Dentoni,  Beatriz García Vidagany, Sharon Fichman and Bianca Botto.

No.1 seed Julia Goerges, whose match never got started because of rain, will be in action Tuesday, as will No.2 seed Polona Hercog.
