BOGOTÁ, Colombia - It wasn't easy, but Catalina Castaño's win on Wednesday at the XIX Copa BBVA Colsanitas moved her into her first quarterfinal since she also made it that far here in 2008.

The Colombian, who was given a wildcard into this event, edged qualifier Sharon Fichman, 46 75 62, rallying from deficits of 4-1 and 5-3 in the second set. She also survived two match points serving at 5-4.

"Praise God I won that match," said Castaño, who also overcame a match point in her first round triumph over Anabel Medina Garrigues. "It was a tough one. I was behind the whole second set and had two match points against me. Sharon is a tough player, so I knew it would be hard. The fans were really behind me and it's nice to get a win like that for my people."

Also Wednesday, fifth-seeded Carla Suárez Navarro beat Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, 16 64 62, to advance to her first quarterfinal since last April in Barcelona. It was a struggle, though, as the Spaniard dropped three straight games with a 4-1 second set lead before closing it out. She will next take on the winner of the rain-interrupted match between top-seeded Julia Goerges and Han Xinyun. The Chinese will be serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set when play resumes Thursday. Also on court for a second round match will be second-seeded Polona Hercog, who squares off with Petra Martic.

In the final first round match, which was early in the third set when it was rained out Tuesday, qualifier Beatriz García Vidagany ended up edging No.4 seed Arantxa Parra Santonja, 75 36 64.
