Julia Serves Notice In México
Julia Goerges

ACAPULCO, México - Julia Goerges has achieved several career-defining moments since last summer, starting with her first career title at Bad Gastein in July. She rose to her career-high singles ranking - No.34 - and doubles ranking - No.33 - on January 31 of this year. Finally, the German was the top seed at an event for the first time last week in Bogotá.

However, perhaps feeling the pressure, Goerges suffered a disappointing second round loss there to Han Xinyun. She put that upset behind her, though, on Monday, as seeded No.1 again at the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL, she routed wildcard Ximena Hermoso, 61 62. She did not drop serve and only lost one point when getting her first serve in, while also firing seven aces.

The other seed in action, sixth-seeded Arantxa Parra Santonja, was also triumphant, though by much less of a margin. The Spaniard edged Sybille Bammer, 76(3) 76(4), surviving two set points against her at 4-5 in the first set and letting a 5-3 second set lead get away from her before clinching her first win of the year.

Also getting her first victory of 2011 was Pauline Parmentier, and Sorana Cirstea advanced as well. Anna Tatishvili, Lesia Tsurenko, Sílvia Soler Espinosa and Madaline Gojnea won in the final round of qualifying to secure main draw berths.

Tuesday's most intriguing clash is No.2 seed Polona Hercog versus Lourdes Domínguez Lino, who picked up her second career title in Bogotá on Sunday.
