BARCELONA, Spain - Next month the stars of the WTA will descend on Barcelona for the fifth consecutive year, as the Barcelona Ladies Open takes place from April 25 to 30. This week several notable names in Spanish tennis helped promote the tournament at a special media announcement event.
Among those names were Carla Suárez Navarro, Spain's youngest Top 100 player; former world No.1 Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario and José Luis Rivera, Co-Tournament Directors for the Barcelona Ladies Open; José Luis Escañuela, President of the Spanish Tennis Federation; Francesc Orriols, President of the Catalan Tennis Federation; and the City of Barcelona's Eduard Reñé.
The tournament boasts an impressive roster of former champions: Meghann Shaughnessy (2007), Maria Kirilenko (2008), Roberta Vinci (2009) and Francesca Schiavone (2010). Last year, Schiavone won the title and just weeks later won her first Grand Slam crown at the French Open.
In 2007, the tournament was held on Barcelona's Olympic clay courts and since 2008 it has been held at the David Lloyd Club Turó, also on red clay.
The following are a video and some pictures from the announcement.
