INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - There was another upset at an already surprise-filled BNP Paribas Open doubles event on Monday, as No.7 seeds Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova were sent to the sidelines.
Benesova and Zahlavova Strycova entered Indian Wells as one of the hottest teams in the world, having won their second title of the year and seventh of their careers together in their most recent outing in Monterrey. However, Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina had little trouble with the Czechs in the second round, upending them, 62 63.
Mirza and Vesnina, who reached the quarters of their first two career events together at Dubai and Doha earlier this year, will play Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska on Tuesday in a match-up of unseeded duos. The Poles, who came into Indian Wells on a four match losing streak, followed up their first round upset of second-seeded Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik with a 61 46 105 defeat of Chuang Chia-Jung and Alexandra Dulgheru on Monday.
The other quarterfinal that will be played Tuesday pits wildcards Jelena Jankovic and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova against No.6 seeds Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko. Jankovic and Pavlyuchenkova, playing their first tournament together, stunned No.1 seeds Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta in the second round.
