FÈS, Morocco - Aravane Rezai's first career event as a No.1 seed almost ended after just one match at the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem, as she was in big trouble against Arantxa Rus before prevailing. She trailed, 64 42, then won eight straight games to capture the second set and seize control of the third during her 46 64 63 first round triumph.

Rezai will be seeking consecutive wins for the first time since Palermo last July when she takes on Nadia Lalami in the second round. The Frenchwoman wasn't the only player who endured a major challenge on Tuesday, as Eleni Daniilidou was down, 62 42, to Urszula Radwanska. She also had a match point against her at 6-5 in the second set and was down 5-2 in the second set tie-break before eventually surviving, 26 76(8) 64. This was the first main draw match win of the year for Daniilidou, who got into the draw as a lucky loser when Jelena Dokic withdrew because of a viral illness.

In another noteworthy result, Dinara Safina showed no ill effects from the back injury that forced her to retire from her quarterfinal match in Marbella. The Russian raised her all-time record against Jill Craybas to 6-0 with a 61 60 rout in 51 minutes. She will next play the winner of the match between eighth-seeded Alizé Cornet and Andrea Hlavackova, which was suspended by darkness with the Frenchwoman leading, 63 53.

Among the intriguing matches on Wednesday's slate is No.3 seed Lourdes Domínguez Lino versus Melanie Oudin.
