Vinci followed up her first and second round straight set victories with another one in Thursday's quarterfinal action, handling Virginie Razzano, 64 61, her third straight set win in three career encounters with the Frenchwoman. The sixth-seeded Vinci is now a remarkable 12-1 at this event, having won it in 2009 and been runner-up last year. In Friday's semifinals, the Italian will square off with the winner of Polona Hercog and Laura Pous-Tio, who were in the first set when rain suspended play for the day.
On the bottom half of the draw, Sara Errani defeated fellow Italian Alberta Brianti, 62 63, in the process snapping the six-match winning streak of last week's Fès champion. This is the fifth-seeded Errani's fifth appearance here and her best result, surpassing her quarterfinal showing in 2008. Already this year, she had been a runner-up in Pattaya City and a semifinalist in Marbella.
Next up for Errani is Lucie Hradecka, a 64 64 winner over qualifier Estrella Cabeza Candela. The Czech, who rallied from a 4-0 second set deficit, has matched her best result of the year, having also been a semifinalist at Memphis in February.
Also Thursday, two teams made it through to the doubles semifinals - No.1 seeds Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and No.3 seeds Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova.
