ROME, Italy - First round doubles play continued Tuesday at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, with both seeded teams in action moving on in straight sets.
Leading the way were No.7 seeds Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who disposed of Nuria Llagostera Vives and Arantxa Parra Santonja, 62 62. On the heels of their WTA-leading third title of 2011 in Barcelona, the Czechs had a surprising first round loss to Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova last week in Madrid. But now they appear to be back on track, having improved their record to 17-5 on the year. In the second round, they will play Nadia Petrova and Anastasia Rodionova.
Eighth-seeded María José Martínez Sánchez and Anabel Medina Garrigues also advanced comfortably, topping Hsieh Su-Wei and Yan Zi, 64 62. The Spaniards' history together goes all the way back to 2001, a year in which they picked up all four of their career titles together. They did not pair up after 2003 until this year, with a semifinal showing in Miami being their best result in the four events they played before this week.
In a contest involving unseeded teams, Daniela Hantuchova and Agnieszka Radwanska disposed of Casey Dellacqua and Rennae Stubbs, 60 63. Hantuchova and Radwanska had never played together before this year, yet already have a title in Miami and a semifinal showing in Indian Wells to show for their efforts. Next up for them is a match-up with No.2 seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik on Wednesday.
There was one second round match on Tuesday, with third-seeded Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova, semifinalists last week in Madrid, beating wildcards Nastassya Burnett and Regina Kulikova, 63 60.
