ROME, Italy - Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik against Daniela Hantuchova and Agnieszka Radwanska is a clash one might expect to see in the late stages of a doubles event, but it was actually a second round match-up on Wednesday at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia.

No.2 seeds Peschke and Srebotnik were 23-7 in 2011 coming into the encounter, highlighted by two titles and three runners-up showings. Hantuchova and Radwanska were 11-4, highlighted by an unexpected run to the title in Miami. Peschke and Srebotnik were the better team this time, taking a comfortable 63 62 victory in their first match since their loss to Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko in Saturday's Madrid final. Also into the quarters are Peng Shuai and Zheng Jie, who rallied from second set deficits of 4-0 and 5-3 in their 75 75 defeat of No.4 seeds Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond.

Sixth-seeded Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Meghann Shaughnessy won their first round match against Corinna Dentoni and Romina Oprandi in about as dominant a fashion as possible. They lost only 18 points in 44 minutes as they recorded their first career double bagel together. They next play fellow Americans Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, whom they have already beaten twice this year. Fifth-seeded Kirilenko and Elena Vesnina were the only seeds not to make it out of the first round, as they were forced to retire in the first set of their match versus Shahar Peer and Ipek Senoglu because of Kirilenko having a viral illness.

Defending champions and No.1 seeds Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta will square off with Vera Dushevina and Tatiana Poutchek in one of Thursday's featured matches.
