Ranking Watch: Maria Keeps Climbing

There was some movement in the Top 10 following last week's Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome, highlighted by champion Maria Sharapova switching places with runner-up Samantha Stosur.

In going from No.8 to No.7, Sharapova established her highest ranking since she was No.6 in November 2008, quite a feat for someone who was ranked outside the Top 20 as recently as last October. However, Sharapova will lose some points on the next rankings, as she is not defending her title this week in Strasbourg. Also switching places in the Top 10 were Petra Kvitova and Jelena Jankovic. A week after climbing to a career-high No.10, Kvitova ascended one spot further.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova went from No.16 to No.14 to match her career-high that she first established in January. Julia Goerges, who cracked the Top 20 for the first time last week, is now up to No.18. Jarmila Gajdosova went up three spots to a new career-high of No.25, making this the first week since January 1989 that two Australians are in the Top 25. Greta Arn's run to the quarters in Rome lifted her to No.40, besting her previous career-high by six spots. It also made the 32-year-old the highest-ranked Hungarian and the oldest player not only in the Top 40 but in the Top 50.

In going from No.102 to No.95, Anastasia Pivovarova made her Top 100 debut and became the 16th Russian in the Top 100. The Czech Republic has the second-most players in the Top 100 with nine.
