Arantxa Rus

PARIS, France - No.2 seed Kim Clijsters' shocking loss to Arantxa Rus in the second round of the French Open on Thursday was the first time since 2004 that one of the Top 2 seeds lost prior to the third round at Roland Garros. That has actually happened only seven times in the Open Era. Here are the circumstances of each:

Year Result (Seed In Parentheses) Winner's Finish
1971 1R Tuero d. (2) Wade 75 ret. QF
1974 2R Fuchs d. (2) Wade 75 64 3R
1979 2R Lovera Chanfreau d. (2) Wade 75 76(9) 2R
2000 1R Monami d. (2) Davenport 67(5) 64 63 2R
2001 1R Schett d. (2) V.Williams 64 64 R16
2004 2R Garbin d. (1) Henin 75 64 3R
2011 2R Rus d. (2) Clijsters 36 75 61 ?

Notes: The 112 spots between No.2-ranked Clijsters and No.114 Rus was the second-greatest upset of Clijsters' career in terms of ranking differential. The greatest was when No.258 Beatriz García Vidagany beat No.10 Clijsters in the second round of Marbella last year ... In Rus' only previous Grand Slam match against a seed, she lost to No.23 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova at this year's Australian Open ... Rus' only previous encounter with a Top 10 player was a three set loss to then No.9 Maria Sharapova earlier this month in the first round of Madrid ... Rus will play No.25 seed Maria Kirilenko in the third round.
