PARIS, France - Looking like they could step back onto the main stage tomorrow, former world No.1s Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis beat Martina Navratilova and Jana Novotna to win the Trophée des Légendes Dames at Roland Garros on Sunday. Davenport and Hingis, who was famously named after Navratilova, proved too strong for their fellow legends, 61 62.

In the semifinals, played Saturday, Davenport and Hingis edged Andrea Temesvari and Sandrine Testud in a match tie-break, 63 67(4) 100. The other combination in their pool in the crowd-pleasing event was 2010 International Tennis Hall of Fame inductees Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva, who won 14 majors together but went winless in the round robin this week.

For their part, Navratilova and Novotna beat Iva Majoli and Conchita Martínez in their semi, 75 61. Former top tenners Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria and Nathalie Tauziat of France, beat Majoli and Martínez in the round robin but missed a slot in the semis on a countback.

With three former singles No.1s and six former doubles No.1s participating, there was no shortage of 'history' in the good-spirited Paris line-up - some memories no doubt happier than others.

For starters, Navratilova and Temesvari won the French Open doubles together in 1986; a 17-year-old Zvereva upset Navratilova on her way to the final in Paris in 1988; Martínez surprised Navratilova in the final at Wimbledon in 1994; Majoli shocked Hingis to capture the French Open in 1997; Hingis and Novotna won three Grand Slam titles as a unit; and Novotna beat Tauziat in the final at Wimbledon in 1998.

Trophée champions Davenport and Hingis played 25 times across 11 years on the WTA, with the American edging the Swiss Miss in the final count, 14-11. They met in two Grand Slam finals, Davenport winning the US Open in 1998 and the Australian Open in 2000.
