BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom - Sara Errani and Aravane Rezai were the two biggest names to go down in third round action Thursday in Birmingham.

The seventh-seeded Italian Errani was defeated by Marina Erakovic, 57 64 63. Prior to this week, the New Zealander had not won a main draw match since last year at the AEGON Classic, where she happened to lose to Errani. Birmingham has been quite kind to Erakovic, as she is 9-2 in her career here and 43-51 everywhere else. Her best result at this event is a semifinal showing in 2008, matching her best result anywhere. In the quarters, Erakovic will play third-seeded Peng Shuai, a 76(1) 61 winner over Heather Watson.

"I played a really bad tie-break and after that my confidence went down," said Watson, who made her Top 100 debut on the rankings this week at No.93. "I tried to forget about it and just started fresh in the second set but my returns let me down today. I feel like I am getting stronger mentally, though, and I am excited for next week."

Speaking of confidence, Ana Ivanovic's is certainly up after a 63 62 victory over No.13 seed Rebecca Marino sent her into her first quarterfinal since Indian Wells in March.

"I just focused on my own serve, and on her second serve I stepped in and was aggressive," said the second-seeded Ivanovic, who has only dropped a total of six games in her two matches so far this week. "I felt good out there. I just kept thinking positively and tried to perform the best I could."

Next up for Ivanovic is Mirjana Lucic, who reached her first quarterfinal since 1999 in May in Strasbourg and is now into another one less than a month later.

On the heels of an impressive showing at the French Open, No.4 seed Daniela Hantuchova is also into the quarterfinals, where she will take on Alison Riske, who upset No.8 seed Rezai in three sets. Also victorious Thursday was No.14 seed Magdalena Rybarikova. The 2009 Birmingham champion is now 11-1 in her career here.
