Despite serving eight double faults and making just half of her first serves, Rezai - who beat Gisela Dulko in last year's final but is unseeded having returned to Bastad on a ranking of No.75 - worked her way past Akgul Amanmuradova, 62 46 63. But Czech lefty Safarova was surprised by Russia's Vesna Dolonts in straight sets, 63 64.

Things were smoother for No.4 seed Lourdes Dominguez Lino, who had too much clay court guile for Swedish wildcard Ellen Allgurin, 63 64; and No.7 seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who beat Hilda Melander, another Swedish wildcard, 62 63. However, there was better news for the host nation when Swedish No.1 Johanna Larsson cruised past Alla Kudryavtseva, 63 61.

In other matches, US veteran Jill Craybas didn't quite enjoy the 37th birthday she'd have liked when she fell to Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus in three sets, 26 76(5) 61. But there was joy for Mona Barthel, Olivia Rogowska, Alizé Lim and Tetyana Arefyeva, who all won through to the main draw from the qualifying event.

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki makes her first appearance of the week on Tuesday evening, when she faces France's Alizé Cornet in her opener. Wozniacki was the runner-up in Bastad in 2009, when she was beaten by María José Martínez Sánchez, who also plays her opener on day two.

Swedish No.2 Sofia Arvidsson - the 27-year-old currently sits eight places below Larsson, at No.73 - plays French open doubles champion Andrea Hlavackova in the second match on center court on Tuesday.
