No.3 seed Klara Zakopalova was pushed the most, starting off in a 5-3 first set hole, but eventually edged 18-year-old qualifier Aleksandra Krunic, 75 75.

"It was very hard because she was moving around the court unbelievably," Zakopalova said. "She is a big fighter, is young and has nothing to lose. It is tough to play against people like that. I'm very happy that I'm through."

Next up for Zakopalova is Kateryna Bondarenko, who beat Olga Savchuk, 63 62, to reach her second quarterfinal of the year.

"I don't necessarily have to make the final here. I just want to play my best tennis," said Zakopalova, whose best result of the year so far is a semifinal showing in Auckland. "Every match is likely to be tough."

Also tested was fifth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues, who ousted Lesia Tsurenko, 62 75.

"I think it was a good match. At the beginning, she made mistakes and I managed to hit winning shots," Medina Garrigues said. "I took a 5-1 lead and won the set, 6-2. In the second set, my opponent began to play much better and I had to fight really hard to keep myself in the match. At 3-all, we changed courts because the one we started on was too soft and too difficult to play. I went up 5-3 but she leveled the set again. Then my play became more solid and I managed to finish more points at the net."

Other winners were No.7 seed Irina-Camelia Begu and Zuzana Kucova. This is Begu's second-best career result, having been a runner-up in Marbella earlier this year. Kucova is now into her first career quarterfinal.
