"The match was more difficult than I expected," said Vinci, who was two points from an upset loss at 64 54, deuce, before rallying. "My opponent is young but she is a good player. At the beginning, I was tired and didn't play very well. I played better in the second set and at the end, especially with my forehand."

Vinci, who plays Zuzana Kucova in Friday's quarterfinals, is having another strong showing during a terrific 2011 that has been highlighted by titles in Barcelona and 's-Hertogenbosch and a semifinal showing in Pattaya City.

Fellow Italian and No.2 seed Sara Errani, also having a fine year highlighted by a runner-up showing in Pattaya City and semifinal showings in Marbella and Barcelona, advanced with a 63 61 victory over Stefanie Voegele.

"It was a tight match on a hot day," Errani said. "The first set was closer, but at the end I stepped up my game to counter her crosscourt backhands. In the second set when I was 3-1 up, I began to feel my opponent get tired. She tried to hit the ball harder but couldn't really do it."

Next up for Errani is sixth-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, whom she is 3-1 against in her career.

"We know each other very well. We train together in Valencia," Errani said. "I think we're going to play a good match here."

Also Thursday, Estrella Cabeza Candela got past Eva Birnerova, 76(4) 63, to match her best career result - a quarterfinal showing in Barcelona earlier this year. In addition, her three wins here in qualifying and two wins so far in the main draw gave her a career-best five match WTA win streak. She will play Irina-Camelia Begu in the quarterfinals.
