Pennetta Eyes Another Palermo Title
Flavia Pennetta

PALERMO, Italy - Three of Italy's finest headline this week's XXIV SNAI Open - Internazionali Femminili Di Palermo. Flavia Pennetta, the country's No.2, is top seed, with Roberta Vinci, coming off her third title of the season at Budapest, seeded second and Sara Errani, another player with a great track record in Sicily, the No.3 seed.

World No.21 Pennetta was beaten in last year's Palermo final by Kaia Kanepi. Two years ago she beat Errani for the title - her first on home soil. The year before that, Errani had clinched her first WTA singles title here, before heading off to Portoroz and lifting the trophy there too.

But the Italian Fed Cup buddies won't have the limelight all to themselves. Ever threatening Czech Klara Zakopalova is seeded fourth, while Anabel Medina Garrigues, who has pocketed four of her nine clay court titles at this event (three in a row from 2004-06, and way back in 2001) is the No.5 seed. The 28-year-old Spaniard beat Zakopalova (then Koukalova) in the final here in 2005, and Pennetta in 2004.

Tsvetana Pironkova, who turned her season around so impressively with a quarterfinal run at Wimbledon, will look for her first title as the No.5 seed. Polona Hercog, who enjoyed her maiden tournament win at last week's Collector Swedish Open in Bastad, will try to do the back-to-back trick from the No.6 slot. Rounding out the seedings at No.8 is Czech Petra Cetkovska, who upset Agnieszka Radwanska and Ana Ivanovic on her way to the last 16 at the recent Wimbledon.

Wildcards into the $220,000 red clay event have been awarded to Italians Anna Floris, who opens against Medina Garrigues; Silvia Albano, who plays countrywoman Alberta Brianti; and Anastassia Grymalska, who bumps straight into Pennetta.

Errani and Vinci are the doubles top seeds, with Zakopalova and French Open doubles titlist Andrea Hlavackova seeded No.2.
