Goerges Returns To Defend Bad Gastein Title
Julia Goerges

BAD GASTEIN, Austria - The fifth annual NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies takes place in Bad Gastein, Austria this week, with one of the WTA's newest Top 20 players - Julia Goerges - the top seed and defending champion.

Last year, a No.65-ranked Goerges powered her way through the draw in Bad Gastein and collected her first WTA title, and now returns ranked No.16 in the world after an absolute breakthrough first half of 2011, which has included her second WTA title at the Premier-level event in Stuttgart and two wins over the No.1 ranked player in the world right now, Caroline Wozniacki.

Goerges has an interesting first round draw in Spain's Laura Pous-Tio. Though Goerges is perfect in main draw matches at this event - last year was her only main draw appearance here - she did play the qualifying in 2007, falling to none other than Pous-Tio in straight sets. That was their only previous encounter.

Perhaps Goerges' closest competition in the draw will come from No.2 seed and fellow big-hitter Jarmila Gajdosova. Gajdosova has also won her first two WTA titles in the last year and is now firmly established in the Top 30. This is her first appearance at this event and she will have a tough opener in Johanna Larsson, who just reached the final in Bastad and broke into the Top 50 this week.

Rounding out the seeds are Lucie Hradecka, Iveta Benesova, Lourdes Domínguez Lino, Simona Halep, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Ksenia Pervak. Former Top 20 players Alizé Cornet and María José Martínez Sánchez are also in the field, as is two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist Carla Suárez Navarro, who has fallen out of the Top 100 due to an elbow injury and is playing a WTA main draw for the first time since Acapulco in February.

Francesca Schiavone, Pauline Parmentier and Andrea Petkovic are the 2007, 2008 and 2009 champions here, although none of them are in this year's field. Apart from 2010 champion Goerges, 2007 runner-up Yvonne Meusburger and 2008 runner-up Hradecka are returning finalists in the draw.
