Smooth Road To Round 2 For Anabel
Anabel Medina Garrigues

PALERMO, Italy - Anabel Medina Garrigues has posted impressive results around the world throughout her career, highlighted by 10 titles. However, the Spaniard seems to take her game to a level beyond impressive when playing on the red clay in Palermo.

Competing here for the first time since her 18-match win streak at this event was snapped in the 2008 semifinals, the fifth-seeded Medina Garrigues handled wildcard Anna Floris, 63 63, in first round play on Tuesday. The 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006 champion, a titlist in Palermo more times than anyone else, is now 28-3 here.

A player who has been hot at multiple events lately stayed that way, as No.2 seed Roberta Vinci - recently a winner in 's-Hertogenbosch and Budapest - beat qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva, 62 75. Next up for the Italian, who has 13 victories in her last 14 matches, is her victim in last week's Budapest final - Irina-Camelia Begu.

Also moving on during an undefeated first round for seeds at the XXIV SNAI Open was another Italian, third-seeded Sara Errani. The 2008 Palermo champion and 2009 runner-up disposed of Regina Kulikova, 61 63.

The strangest scoreline of the day involved No.4 seed Klara Zakopalova, who rebounded from a bagel loss in the first set to top Anastasia Pivovarova, 06 61 61. No.7 seed Polona Hercog, fresh off her first career title in Bastad that resulted in her rising to a career-high ranking of No.37, edged qualifier Karin Knapp, 57 64 62. No.8 seed Petra Cetkovska defeated qualifier Elena Bovina, 61 75, despite Bovina serving for the second set at 5-4.

Tuesday's unseeded winners were Begu, Pauline Parmentier, Mathilde Johansson, Sorana Cirstea, qualifier Ani Mijacika and lucky loser Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino.
