PALERMO, Italy - Before this year, Irina-Camelia Begu had never even been beyond the first round of a WTA event. However, the 20-year-old Romanian had a surprising run to the Marbella final in April. Then last week in Budapest, she again was a finalist, but was unable to hold onto a 4-2 lead in the third set against Roberta Vinci, eventually losing, 64 16 64.

Begu, who rose to a career-high No.60 on the new rankings, did not have to wait long for her chance at revenge, facing off with the second-seeded Vinci in the second round of the XXIV SNAI Open on Thursday. Begu started in a 2-4 first set hole, but won four straight games to take the set. Down a break at 2-3 in the second set, she again won four straight games to clinch the match, 64 63.

Next up for Begu, the only unseeded quarterfinalist in Palermo, is her victim in the Budapest semifinals - No.5 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues. The Spaniard, a four-time champion here, beat lucky loser Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino, 61 75, to raise her record to 29-3 at this event.

Another former Palermo champ, 2008 winner Sara Errani, was down in the first set against Pauline Parmentier, 2-5, 15-40, but then won eight straight games to secure the first set and gain control in the second of her 75 61 triumph. She is now 3-0 against Parmentier, never having dropped a set. The third-seeded Errani will play eighth-seeded Petra Cetkovska in Friday's quarters.

Also Thursday, No.4 seed Klara Zakopalova edged qualifier Ani Mijacika, 75 46 63, to set up a clash with Polona Hercog, whom she is 0-4 against. The Czech is looking to match her best results of the year - semifinal showings in Hobart and Budapest.
