PALERMO, Italy - Anabel Medina Garrigues has become the WTA's new active leader for clay court titles after winning the XXIV SNAI Open on Sunday, her fifth title in Palermo and 10th overall title on the slow surface.

Medina Garrigues, the No.5 seed this week, played high and deep to No.7 seed Polona Hercog's backhand and made some inspired gets during a 63 62 win in the final of the International-level event, held at the Country Time Club.

"I think Polona was a little bit tired, because she won in Bastad last week and made the final here too, but I played a really good match," Medina Garrigues said. "I was very serious today. I was focusing on the tactics me and my coach talked about, and it worked. I'm also just trying to enjoy playing tennis and trying not to think about winning or losing, my ranking, or anything else. I just want to play my best on the court and because of that I have been doing well."

Only three other active players have won a WTA event five times: Venus Williams (at Wimbledon), Serena Williams (at the Australian Open and Miami) and Kim Clijsters (at Luxembourg). Medina Garrigues is 32-3 lifetime in Palermo, winning in 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006 and now 2011.

"I think the environment of this tournament is the key," the 28-year-old Spaniard added. "I always manage to play well here and I'm also really happy to win here for the fifth time - the other players who have done that on the WTA are really, really good players. Now I'm going to go and celebrate this victory."

Medina Garrigues passed Venus Williams for most WTA clay court titles among active players (she had been tied with Williams for nine).

Hercog was on a nine-match winning streak, winning her first WTA title last week in Bastad and making the finals for the second straight week here in Palermo. The 20-year-old is now 1-2 in her career in WTA finals.

On Saturday, Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci won their fifth WTA doubles title together, beating Czech pairing Andrea Hlavackova and Klara Zakopalova in the final, 75 61. Errani and Vinci, who were the top seeds, already had titles at Marbella and Barcelona last year and at Hobart and Pattaya City earlier this year. They now each have eight WTA doubles titles.
