Quotable Quotes... Kirilenko In Stanford
Maria Kirilenko

STANFORD, CA, USA - After going 5-9 to start the year Maria Kirilenko has picked up her level again, going 8-4 in her last five tournaments - including reaching the fourth round of Roland Garros and the third round of Wimbledon. Also in that record is a first round win over Julia Goerges in Stanford - her first Top 20 win in a year. The No.25-ranked Russian met the press after that win...

On her 5-9 start to the season...
"At the beginning of the year I wasn't happy about my singles results. When the clay court season came I lost early in my first few tournaments but I felt I was playing well - I think I just got a bit unlucky. I felt my form coming up again. But the whole time I was doing well in doubles - so at least there was something!"

On her first round win over Goerges in Stanford...
"I think I played a pretty good match for my first match on hardcourts after Wimbledon, especially since I had such a long break - I didn't play for four weeks. First I didn't play at all for one week, just did complete rest - then I practiced for the last few weeks. I was happy with how I played today. I didn't make mistakes - I was playing very clean. That's how I won against her."

On playing Serena in the second round...
"I just played her at Wimbledon, but it's a completely different surface this time. I'm ready to play her again. I'll try to do my best, try to win of course!"

On playing Serena in general...
"Every time I play Serena she plays so well against me. She has a very good serve - I couldn't break her at all at Wimbledon. That's a big advantage for her. I'm hoping my return will be good, and maybe her serve won't be as good this time! She's powerful in the rest of her game but I feel less pressure there because I can play the rally. The most important thing for me is returning.

"I really need to be focused from the beginning too. Every time I play her, I'm always 3-0 or 4-0 down early on. I just have to be ready from the first point, because if I fall behind like that, it's always so tough to win against her.

"The first time I played her I was 16 and it was at the French Open... I was up 4-2 in the third set and lost 6-4 in the third set. I was small. I also wasn't even thinking about anything - I just went out there and played. I have to do the same thing this time, just not think about it. I've seen video of my matches back then and my face was always so serious and focused - I think I'm still like that.

"Serena's a great champion. She has won so many tournaments and has a huge amount of experience. She didn't play for a year and comes back and is winning again. You have to be so tough to do that. Again though, it's important for me not to think about it - I'll think of it as just another match."

On Dementieva's wedding...
"It was a great wedding! It was the best wedding I've ever been to. Elena and her husband were always with the guests, talking to us a lot, singing and dancing... normally at weddings the pair just sits and watches, and it's kind of boring. But Elena and Maxim were interacting with us. They even sang a song together - I wish I could listen to them one more time! I think they practiced a lot for that. It was a Russian song, about love and being together - I don't remember all the words. I was surprised, she sang well! She was also telling me it took almost half a year to organize the wedding, which is amazing. It was amazing.

"I didn't catch the bouquet. All the girls tried to catch it but Dushevina came out from somewhere and stole it from me! I said okay, whatever."
