Stats Corner: Marathon Matches At Majors
Samantha Stosur

NEW YORK, NY, USA - 2011 has been quite a year for epic matches at Grand Slams. The Australian Open featured the longest match in terms of duration at a major in the Open Era. Wimbledon included the second-longest match at the All-England Club. Then, Samantha Stosur outlasted Nadia Petrova last Friday in the longest-recorded US Open match.

Here are the Top 3 longest matches at each major during the Open Era:

3 hrs, 5 mins Bammer d. Bartoli 76(3) 06 64 2008/R16

Notes: Cibulkova, Fernandez, Paszek and Stosur are the only ones on the list to win the match that followed their epic victory ...  The longest women's match, major or non-major, of the Open Era is 6 hours, 31 minutes, with Vicki Nelson-Dunbar having beaten Jean Hepner, 64 76(11), in the first round of Richmond in 1984 … The US Open is the only of the four majors to feature tie-breaks in the final set, thus reducing the chances for longer matches.
