TASHKENT, Uzbekistan - One seed was eliminated on Monday at the Tashkent Open, two on Tuesday and then three more on Wednesday, leaving just two to compete in Thursday's quarterfinals. The latest victims were fourth-seeded Anastasija Sevastova, fifth-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova and seventh-seeded Evgeniya Rodina.
Watch all the action from Tashkent and Québec City with WTA Live!Valeria Savinykh let a 75 31 lead against Sevastova slip away, but held on for a 75 36 63 win to put her in the quarterfinals of just her second WTA main draw, having dropped her opener in Baku earlier this year.
"I have lost so many close matches from winning positions this year, and this match looked no different," Savinykh said. "I just took some time and said to myself that I'm not going to lose this match, and just went for winners. This match has given me back my lost confidence."
Victoria Larrière, playing her first career WTA event, defeated Rybarikova, 64 64, to set up a clash with No.1 seed Ksenia Pervak.
"I just learned today that you don't have to play unbelievable tennis to win, but just play the game and be consistent," Larrière said of her triumph over the 72nd-ranked Rybarikova. "Having coming through qualifying here and playing my first-ever WTA and first time against a Top 100 player, I was under pressure, but as the match progressed I felt comfortable and went for my shots."
Eva Birnerova took out Rodina, 67(4) 64 61, and will play Savinykh next.
"It's a great win for me," Birnerova said. "Now I have won two matches in a row, and each match has been a very good experience for me."
