GUANGZHOU, China - Jarmila Gajdosova had not been beyond the semifinals of a WTA event in her decade as a pro until Guangzhou last year. Not only did she reach the final four, she went all the way to the title in dominant fashion, without losing more than four games in a set all week. She is back at the WANLIMA Guangzhou International Women's Open this year and looks to be in championship form again if her 54-minute, 62 61 first round rout of Han Xinyun on Tuesday is any indication.

"I will take it one match at a time," the second-seeded Gajdosova said. "I started pretty well today. I have hopefully four more to go and if I defend my title, I'll be really happy."

No.1 seed Maria Kirilenko also advanced, beating Alona Bondarenko, 64 62, to snap her two-match losing streak against the Ukrainian.

"I'm happy to get through the first round," Kirilenko said. "It was really tough today. A lot of long rallies. I had to fight for every point. For the first match I played really well, but I feel I can improve a lot for the next one."

Other seeded winners were seventh-seeded Chanelle Scheepers and eighth-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova. Scheepers edged Anastasija Sevastova, 75 16 63, coming back from a 5-0 deficit in a first set in which she survived three set points. Rybarikova got past Jill Craybas, 63 46 62.

There were a few upsets on Tuesday, with No.3 seed Ksenia Pervak, No.5 seed Bojana Jovanovski and No.6 seed Alberta Brianti all going down. Three days after capturing her first career title in Tashkent, Pervak retired with a left shoulder injury while trailing Chan Yung-Jan in the first set, 4-1. Tetiana Luzhanska outlasted Jovanovski, 63 46 76(4), for her first WTA main draw match victory. Zheng Jie got past Brianti, 76(3) 64, surviving a set point and a 5-3 deficit in the first set and a 4-2 deficit in the second.
