Although second-seeded Gajdosova retrieved a break as Rybarikova served for the opening set, Rybarikova collected by breaking Gajdosova to love. The momentum stayed with eighth-seeded Rybarikova until 3-0 in the second before Gajdosova pulled level. However, Rybarikova issued her only two aces of the match to hold for 4-3 and broke again on her way to victory, 64 63.

Rybarikova's opponent in Friday's semifinals will be unseeded Zheng Jie, after the former world No.15 wore down fourth seed Petra Martic of Croatia to reach her first semi of the season.

Martic broke Zheng twice to race through the opening set and also made the first breakthrough in the second, building a 4-2 lead. But Zheng reeled off four games in a row to level at a set apiece, and made a breakthrough of her own for 3-1 in the decider. It was all the advantage the 83rd-ranked veteran needed as she proceeded to serve out the contest to love, 16 64 63.

"In the first set, I was a little nervous and it wasn't that she played amazingly well, I just gave a lot of points to her," said Zheng. "However I feel like I'm playing better and better here in Guangzhou as the matches go on."

Rybarikova and Zheng have met once previously, the Slovak prevailing in the round of 16 at Birmingham in 2009, before going on to capture the title.

In the other quarterfinals, top seed Maria Kirilenko ended the run of Tetiana Luzhanska, 61 75, while No.7 seed Chanelle Scheepers outlasted Urszula Radwanska, 46 76(6) 63.

Radwanska was two points from victory at 6-5 in the second set but Scheepers held on to force the tie-break. There, Radwanska was again two points from the win but the South African leveled. Then, up a break in the decider Scheepers saved four break-back points to book an appointment with Kirilenko.

Kirilenko leads Scheepers 2-1, but they have split wins this season, Scheepers winning on hardcourts at Dubai and Kirilenko prevailing at Roland Garros.

With Chan Chin-Wei and Han Xinyun through to the doubles finals after beating Chan Hao-Ching and Chan Yung-Jan on Thursday, the other spot will be decided between Hsieh Su-Wei and Zheng Saisai and No.2 seeds Alberta Brianti and Martic on Friday.
