SEOUL, South Korea - Julia Goerges led the final charge for quarterfinal spots at the Hansol Korea Open on Thursday, as the last four second round matches of the International-level event took the Olympic Tennis Courts.

Goerges, the No.3 seed, had all she could handle from Eleni Daniilidou but managed to get past the tournament's 2006 champion in two close sets, 64 75. Daniilidou led 3-1 in the first set and 5-2 in the second set but Goerges was able to rebound each time to score the one-hour, 38-minute victory.

Awaiting Goerges in the quarterfinals is No.6 seed María José Martínez Sánchez, who was twice two points from losing the first set but closed it out and rolled to a 76(5) 62 win over Czech qualifier Kristyna Pliskova.

"She was serving well. It was hard to break her but in the second set I really focused and gave myself a better chance to win," Martínez Sánchez said. "Normally I win three or four games with serve and volley, and that was working today. My style is different and I like taking risks when I'm playing."

Martínez Sánchez beat Goerges in their only previous meeting, although that was three years ago and neither player was even ranked in the Top 80 at the time. "I played with her three or four years ago in the US," the Spaniard said. "She's really good and competitive. It will be a difficult match."

An all-unseeded quarterfinal match-up between Vera Dushevina and Galina Voskoboeva was also set. Dushevina beat Alexandra Dulgheru, 63 61, while Voskoboeva had a closer victory against Iveta Benesova, 64 64.

"The games were very close today. Not everything was perfect but I fought very well," Voskoboeva said. "I played well during the important moments."

Voskoboeva is coached by recently-retired player Alina Jidkova. "Everyone thought she was playing here but she's not," Voskoboeva smiled. "She's an ex-player. We've been working together since the beginning of the year."

Dushevina leads Voskoboeva in their head-to-head series, 4-1.

The other two quarterfinals were set Wednesday, with No.4 seed Dominika Cibulkova to face No.5 seed Polona Hercog and Klara Zakopalova to play Vania King. All four quarterfinal matches will take place on Friday.
