Ranking Watch: Scheepers Soars Into Top 50
Chanelle Scheepers

It has been quite a week for Chanelle Scheepers. On Thursday, she got past Urszula Radwanska in Guangzhou to reach her first career semifinal. On Friday, she survived Maria Kirilenko to advance to her first final. On Saturday, she beat Magdalena Rybarikova to win her first title and the first by any South African since Amanda Coetzer won Acapulco in 2003.

Finally, on Monday, Scheepers climbed from No.73 on the rankings to a new career-high of No.41. In so doing, she became just the seventh South African since 1990 to rank in the Top 50. Here is the complete list:

Player Highest Rank (From '90s On) Date
Amanda Coetzer No.3 11/3/97
Rosalyn Nideffer No.15 4/16/90
Joannette Kruger No.21 5/4/98
Dinky Van Rensburg No.26 1/14/91
Mariaan De Swardt No.28 4/8/96
Chanelle Scheepers No.41 9/26/11
Elna Reinach No.47 8/19/91

Notes: This was Scheepers' Top 50 debut, with her previous career-high being No.65 ... Scheepers' 33-spot ascension was the biggest jump of the week within the Top 100 ... The highest-ranked South African after Scheepers on the new rankings is No.248 Chanel Simmonds ... No.41 is the highest any South African has ranked since Coetzer was No.38 in February 2004 ... All of the listed players' career-high rank is the same as noted in the chart other than Reinach, whose career-high of No.26 occurred in February 1989.

Also making her Top 50 debut and establishing a new career-high Monday was Croatia's Petra Martic, who went from No.55 to No.47. In climbing from No.72 to No.50, Rybarikova is in the Top 50 for the first time since June 2010, in going from No.105 to No.88, Radwanska is in the Top 100 for the first time since March 2010, and in rising from No. 103 to No.98, Stéphanie Foretz Gacon is in the Top 100 for the first time since August 2008.
