LINZ, Austria - Although there was no main draw singles action on Monday at the Generali Ladies Linz, there were some exciting doubles encounters, highlighted by Alberta Brianti and Sara Errani upsetting second-seeded Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova.

In a see-saw first set, the Italians fell in a 4-1 hole, won four straight games, lost two straight and forced a tie-break. There they fell into a 3-0 hole and had a set point against them at 6-5 before rallying to take the set. Grandin and Uhlirova faced a 3-1 deficit in the second set before staging their own rally to capture the set and force a match tie-break, which Brianti and Errani dominated for the 76(8) 67(4) 104 win.

Next up for Brianti and Errani are Julia Goerges and Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who also had a dramatic triumph, 16 76(4) 119, over Nina Bratchikova and Darija Jurak. The Germans were down triple match point at 9-6 in the match tie-break before winning the last five points of the thriller.

Seeds to advance were No.3 seeds Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and No.4 seeds Marina Erakovic and Elena Vesnina. Benesova and Zahlavova Strycova handled Patricia Mayr-Achleitner and Yvonne Meusburger, 63 62, while Erakovic and Vesnina beat Tamira Paszek and Lucie Safarova, 64 62.

Also Monday, Petra Martic, Sorana Cirstea, Stéphanie Foretz Gacon and Vitalia Diatchenko booked spots in the singles main draw with qualifying wins.

No.1 seed and 2009 runner-up Petra Kvitova is among those with first round matches Tuesday. She takes on up-and-coming Canadian Rebecca Marino.
