Career-Best Win For Barthel In Hobart
Mona Barthel

HOBART, Australia - Mona Barthel had the biggest victory of her career in terms of ranking on Wednesday, knocking second-seeded and 27th-ranked Anabel Medina Garrigues out of the Moorilla Hobart International.

Barthel, who had to win three qualifying matches here to make the main draw, raced out to a 5-0 first set lead and a 5-2 second set lead in her convincing 61 64 triumph. Her foe in Thursday's quarterfinals will be Jarmila Gajdosova.

The defending champion and No.5 seed Gajdosova outlasted fellow Australian Anastasia Rodionova, 63 16 64, losing a set for the first time in seven career main draw matches here. The thriller featured a rollercoaster third set in which Gajdosova went up 4-1, dropped three straight games and then held and broke Rodionova to seal the match.

"Felt like I played pretty good tennis today but was a bit unlucky at the end," Rodionova tweeted. "Looking forward to the Australian Open! But I still have doubles here."

Also Wednesday, sixth-seeded Shahar Peer was tested but prevailed in a rain-interrupted clash with qualifier Sacha Jones, 76(7) 64. The Israeli survived four set points in the first set and rallied from 4-2 down in the second set.

"What a day! Warmed up four times. Came off the court three times," tweeted Peer, who next plays Anna Chakvetadze. "From the start to the end it took eight hours to play."
