In her first appearance in Pattaya City last year, Hantuchova did not drop a set in five matches en route to the title. She gave up just two games in her opener this week and is now into the quarterfinals following a 63 62 second round triumph over Urszula Radwanska in which she lost just two more games the rest of the way after the first set was knotted at 3-3.

Hantuchova, fresh off two Fed Cup wins last weekend in the Slovak Republic's defeat of France, brings an 11-3 record in 2012 into her Friday encounter with Vania King. The American raced out to a 5-0 first set lead in her 61 63 victory over Alla Kudryavtseva. The eighth-seeded King will have her hands full with the third-seeded Hantuchova, as she is 0-6 against her, though four of those matches have been extended to a third set.

Sania Mirza and qualifier Hsieh Su-Wei also were victorious to set up a quarterfinal encounter. Mirza, who had lost eight straight main draw matches before this week, showed signs of the form that led her to the semifinals here in 2007 and the final in 2009 in her 64 75 win over Anne Keothavong.

As for Hsieh, she reached the semifinals of her very first WTA event in 2001 in Bali. In her next event a couple of months later, she made the quarterfinals in Pattaya City. More than a decade would pass before she would get that far again, and it finally happened Thursday when she downed Kimiko Date-Krumm, 75 60, rallying from a 5-2 first set deficit and fighting off a set point at 5-3.

All four of the seeded duos in doubles advanced to the semifinals, including No.1 seeds Mirza and Anastasia Rodionova.
