Caroline Wozniacki, Lucie Safarova

Every week there's a lot happening on the WTA - on the court, off the court, by the numbers, even a few tweets... catch up on it all in the WTA Diary.

Match
How do you inject a bit of momentum into a slow start to the season? Well, if you're Lucie Safarova, you do it by beating World No.4 Caroline Wozniacki. Safarova had won two matches in four tournaments this year before landing in Doha for the Qatar Total Open. However, she looked anything but short on confidence against Wozniacki, saving three match points in a 46 64 76(3) win.

Don't worry if you missed Safarova's's Doha dramatics, though, you can catch all the best bits here.

Breakthrough
Paris is the city of love. And the French capital will forever hold a special place in Angelique Kerber's heart after the promising German won her maiden WTA title at the GDF Open Suez last Sunday. Proving that her semifinal run at last year's US Open was no flash in the pan, Kerber stunned No.1 seed Maria Sharapova in the quarters before winning an enthralling final against Marion Bartoli. To top off a great week's work, the 24-year-old is now at a career-high No.22 in the rankings…

Los Geht's Deutschland
Since the turn of the millennium, Germany has been searching for its next tennis star. Now it has five. Andrea Petkovic, Sabine Lisicki, Julia Goerges and now Kerber all sit inside the world's Top 25, and with the high-flying Mona Barthel soon set to join them it surely won't be long before Germany has a successor to Steffi Graf on the Grand Slam honor roll. Talking of Steffi…

Golden Girl
This year is an Olympic one, and Steffi is still the only player in history, male or female, to achieve the 'Golden Slam' (all four majors and Olympic gold in a calendar year). After winning the Australian Open, the only chance of this being repeated in 2012 lies in the hands of Victoria Azarenka; could she do the near-impossible? Only time will tell. But Vika certainly seemed up for the challenge when quizzed about it this week.

"That's everybody's dream to achieve, but, I mean, it's a very difficult task. But I definitely am going to have the mentality to try to do that," Azarenka said.

Fed Cup Playoffs
At the ITF headquarters in London on Tuesday, the eight teams vying for a place in the World Group found out who they would be playing in April's play-offs. The ties are:

Ukraine vs. USA
Japan vs. Belgium
Spain vs. Slovakia
Germany vs. Australia

Welcome Back
Four and a half years after retiring from tennis, Paola Suárez began her comeback this week at the XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas in Bogotá. In her first match back, playing alongside Gisela Dulko, the former doubles World No.1 went down 64 64 to Mailen Auroux and Maria Irigoyen. Suárez, hoping to crown a glittering career with a medal alongside Dulko at this summer's Olympics, is next in action in Monterrey.
