INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA - No.3 seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka and No.2 seeds Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina were victorious in straight sets at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday to set up a final four clash.
Hlavackova and Hradecka had the tougher match, rallying from a 4-2 second set deficit to beat fifth-seeded Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, 62 76(4). It was a measure of revenge for the Czechs, as they lost their first two encounters with Errani and Vinci, including in the semifinals of this year's Australian Open.
Not only are Hlavackova and Hradecka the only team left in the draw yet to drop a set, they also did not drop a set en route to the title in Memphis in their last outing, putting them on a 14-set winning streak. On top of that, they raised their record to 15-1 on the year.
Wednesday's other quarterfinal saw Mirza and Vesnina ease past Gisela Dulko and Paola Suárez, 62 63. The Indian-Russian duo were surprise winners here last year in just their third event. Since then, they have established themselves as one of the WTA's most formidable teams.
Mirza and Vesnina have split their two career meetings with their Thursday semifinal foes Hlavackova and Hradecka, getting the best of them in the first round here last year but falling to them in the final of last year's French Open.
The semifinal on the top half of the draw will be played Friday, with No.1 seeds Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond looking to make it 15 wins in a row when they take on Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
