CHARLESTON, SC, USA - Bidding to become the second player this year after Sara Errani in Acapulco to capture both singles and doubles at the same tournament, Lucie Safarova fell short in the Family Circle Cup singles final against Serena Williams on Sunday, but came through in the doubles alongside Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Pavlyuchenkova and Safarova had to endure major tests all week, starting right away with their 63 67(10) 119 first round win over Vera Dushevina and Marina Erakovic, in which they were two points from defeat in the match tie-break.
Then in their 63 67(10) 119 quarterfinal triumph over third-seeded Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina, whom they also beat in their only previous outing together in Miami, Pavlyuchenkova and Safarova were a game away from losing in the second set and three points away from losing in the match tie-break.
Pavlyuchenkova and Safarova's 64 76(9) semifinal win over No.1 seeds Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond was actually their only straight set match of the week, though they did overcome two set points against them in the second set.
In the final against Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova, Pavlyuchenkova and Safarova were two games from defeat in the second set before forcing a match tie-break. There, they were tied at 6-6 before reeling off the last four points to secure the victory.
"It's amazing," Safarova said. "Nastia and I got our first wildcard in Miami and made the quarters, and here we got our second wildcard and won it. I like doubles. I really enjoy playing doubles and it seems we fit as partners."
