BARCELONA, Spain - It was a perfect day for the seeds at the Barcelona Ladies Open, that is until the end of the day, as Olga Govortsova scored a 64 63 win over the top seed, former French Open winner Francesca Schiavone.

Neither player really got comfortable on serve, Schiavone serving up eight double faults and Govortsova nine, but it was Govortsova who handled it a bit better, breaking one more time each set to dismiss the World No.12 in straights.

"We played each other four times before, so I knew how she plays - she doesn't make mistakes," said Govortsova, who improved to 3-2 in the head-to-head. "I knew I had to be aggressive against her, and I did a good job of that today."

Last year, Govortsova didn't get her first clay court win of the year until Roland Garros. "I like clay," the Belarusian said. "You can use volleys and slice more. I'm going to play more on clay this year, I didn't play much on it last year."

Since reaching the semifinals of the Premier event in Brisbane in the first week of the year, Schiavone has lost eight of 12 matches (and six of her last seven).

Julia Goerges, the tournament's No.2 seed, won eight straight games from 4-all to beat Aravane Rezai, a former World No.15 now ranked No.137, 64 60.

"Aravane's tough - she was Top 20 before," Goerges said. "You have to be ready for every ball when you play her and that's what I did. Not everything worked perfectly for me but you always work on fixing those things for your next match. And there were a few good things today. I'm happy I'm through."

The other seeds in action on Day 2 both cruised, with No.3 seed Dominika Cibulkova winning the first seven games of a 60 63 win over Iryna Brémond and No.5 seed Flavia Pennetta beating recent Bogotá champion and Spanish rising star Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino almost as routinely, 60 64.

Klara Zakopalova, Carla Suárez Navarro, Laura Pous-Tio, Lourdes Domínguez Lino, Yuliya Beygelzimer and Estrella Cabeza Candela also won through as the first round of the International-level event continued.

The first round ends and the second round begins on Wednesday.
