Quotable Quotes... Serena In The Moment
Serena Williams

CHARLESTON, SC, USA - After comfortable wins in her first few matches Serena Williams shifted gears at the Family Circle Cup, going from great to lethal almost overnight - she scored back-to-back 58-minute wins over Sam Stosur and Lucie Safarova in the semifinals and final, with a combined ratio of almost 2.5:1 in winners to errors in those two matches (56 winners, 23 errors).

Williams came away with her 40th WTA title, just the third active player to reach that milestone, after Venus Williams (43) and Kim Clijsters (41).

Afterwards, Williams talked to the Charleston press...

On whether she felt that kind of form coming...
"I definitely didn't. I know I wanted to do certain things on the court, and I was practicing on doing those things, but I didn't expect it to come together now. Hopefully I can improve on this and just use it as one building block - I definitely don't want to stop here. I want to continue to do well."

On whether she has played two matches in a row at that level before...
"Definitely not. But hopefully I can make it three and four and five and six and more and more and more. I definitely want to continue this. I've never played at such a consistently high level with such low unforced errors - and the scary thing is I really feel I could have served so much better today, too."

On whether her practices translated to her matches...
"No. My practices have sucked really. They couldn't have been worse. So the worse I practice, I guess the better I play."

On the rest of the clay court season...
"This is just the beginning of the clay court season - I'm trying to play like this until the end of the clay court season. So we'll see. My goal every year is to win the French Open. This will be another year, another goal. If I don't win it, believe me, I'll be there the next year and the year after, so I'm going to keep working, keep trying and fighting, and doing the best I can do."

On not having much to defend the next several months...
"I have nothing to defend. June - Wimbledon I didn't do anything, Eastbourne I won one match, so that doesn't count. I did pretty well in the summer, but then I dropped off again until this tournament. So I really am like a floating bird."

On her mindset...
"I'm just focused on the moment. I'm living in the present. I'm right here doing a conference now, and that's all I'm thinking about. When I'm on the court, I'm thinking about being on the court. Sometimes my mind does wander a little bit, but for the most part I'm not thinking about too much. Life."

On coming back to Charleston next year...
"If I can, I will for sure be here next year. I play well here - I never realized how well I play here. It's a great atmosphere and I have tons of fans here, so there's no reason I wouldn't want to come again. It's such a nice place to come to, and I also don't want to miss out on the banana pudding again."
