WASHINGTON, DC, USA - The Citi Open will be a joint ATP-WTA event starting with this year's edition from July 28 to August 5.

The ATP version of the event, which was held the week after the inaugural International-level WTA event in 2011, was launched in 1969 and had been sponsored by Legg Mason since 1994. It is an ATP World Tour 500-level event and is recognized as one of the Top 20 tournaments worldwide.

"The tournament has a storied history in Washington, DC," said Dermot Boden, Citi Chief Brand Officer. "It has been a prominent event on the ATP World Tour for years, and we're grateful for the opportunity to do our part in carrying on the rich tradition, along with taking it to new heights as the Citi Open. This iconic Washington, DC, event is a great way to mark our involvement in the local community, both on and off the court."

There will be numerous site upgrades for the event at the William H.G. Fitzgerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park, such as a 2,500-seat show court to accommodate both tournaments.

In the Citi Open's inaugural staging as a WTA event in College Park, No.2 seed Nadia Petrova captured her 10th career title with a victory over No.1 seed Shahar Peer in the final. Past winners of the men's Washington, DC, event include Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors, Guillermo Villas, Andy Roddick, Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Yannick Noah and Arthur Ashe.

Citi is a global financial services company with about 200 million customer accounts and does business in more than 160 countries and jurisdictions. The Citi Open is owned by and benefits the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (WTEF), which seeks to improve life prospects for DC area youth.

Tickets for the 2012 Citi Open will go on sale on May 10. They can be purchased at www.citiopentennis.com or by calling 202-721-9500.
