PARIS, France - Gisela Dulko and Paola Suárez were one of six seeded teams to move on as doubles play began on Tuesday at the French Open.

The Argentines have had periods of success since pairing up when Suárez returned to the WTA in February after a four-and-a-half-year absence, highlighted by semifinal showings in Acapulco and Miami. Though this is their first major as a duo, their confidence should be boosted by the fact that four of Suárez's eight career Grand Slams have come at Roland Garros. She was victorious in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005, each time alongside Virginia Ruano Pascual.

Though challenged, the No.17 seeds Dulko and Suárez got the best of Darya Kustova and Anna Tatishvili, 62 76(4), to advance to the second round.

"Nice win today. Very happy with the way we played," Dulko tweeted. "Thanks so much for your support and also for the people supporting us on the court!"

The favorites in some people's eyes, fourth-seeded Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci were 61 63 victors over Alberta Brianti and Patricia Mayr-Achleitner. The Italians' winning streak, which includes consecutive titles in Barcelona, Madrid and Rome, is now at 14 matches.

No.6 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina each shook off first round losses in singles to join forces for a 64 62 triumph over Julia Goerges and Samantha Stosur.

"Today I had some dark and bright moments," Vesnina tweeted. "Lost singles to good up-and-coming player Heather Watson. She was playing well, but I couldn't find my rhythm. But we won our doubles against very good players and played well. Thank you for your support."

Also advancing were 10th-seeded Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, 11th-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues and Arantxa Parra Santonja and 12th-seeded Nuria Llagostera Vives and María José Martínez Sánchez.

No.8 seeds Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and No.15 seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sania Mirza were the first seeds to be eliminated. Benesova and Zahlavova Strycova were 76(4) 75 losers against Angelique Kerber and Agnieszka Radwanska. Just three days after taking the title in Brussels, Mattek-Sands and Mirza suffered a 63 46 75 defeat at the hands of Nina Bratchikova and Edina Gallovits-Hall.

Defending champions Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, top-seedeed Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond, second-seeded Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik and two-time major winners Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova are among those in first round action on Wednesday.
