PALERMO, Italy - Irina-Camelia Begu arrived for this week's XXV Italiacom Open with just a handful of wins to her name since the end of April. She has looked anything but short of confidence in the Sicilian capital, though, and reached her second semifinal of the year on Friday with a hard-fought win over Estrella Cabeza Candela.

As in her second round against Lourdes Domínguez Lino, Begu was forced to come from a set down against Cabeza Candela after dropping a break-littered opener. However, she turned the match on its head with a run of five straight games to wrap up the second set and move decisively ahead in the third before closing the match out, 57 64 64.

Meeting Begu for a place in the final will be No.1 seed Sara Errani. On a day when temperatures reached as high as 86°F, the Italian wasted little time in reaching her sixth semifinal of the season, dispatching Alexandra Cadantu, 62 62.

In the bottom half of the draw, Britain's Laura Robson scored her second major upset in as many days when she defeated No.5 seed Carla Suárez Navarro. The 64 26 63 triumph came less than 24 hours after Robson secured a career-best win over Roberta Vinci and takes her into a maiden WTA semifinal.

Facing her here will be Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who recorded an upset of her own by knocking out No.3 seed Julia Goerges. Zahlavova Strycova had lost her last two meetings with Goerges, but looked far more comfortable in the difficult conditions, eventually outlasting her higher-ranked foe to progress, 76(4) 67(4) 61.

And Zahlavova Strycova's success this week has not been confined to the singles court; alongside partner Renata Voracova she has also advanced to the doubles final, where they will come up against Darija Jurak and Katalin Marosi.
